At the Back of My Mind - Next month's newsletter

How are things with you? I am doing fantastic, thank you! Being my own boss and going on vacation whenever I please seem to agree with me. Now I am getting ready for our next expedition in December (Palm Desert, San Diego, and a little cruise to Mexico.) Self-esteem and happiness are a big part of my personal success, so I am sharing some insights with you in this newsletter.
As always,, don't hesitate to drop me a line about this newsletter or the previous ones. Back issues can be found here.

Way of the Mind's Article: Building Self-Esteem: How is it done?
Building self-esteem is what we all aspire to do, consciously or subconsciously. But what is the best way of boosting our self-esteem?
Overwhelmed people often say that they need to "take care of themselves." But they usually don't know how to do it. They assume that by giving themselves some free time, eating foods they enjoy, or buying new clothes or new toys, they will take care of themselves. While they might give themselves some temporary pleasure, they won't be building self-esteem in the long run.
In order to be happy, we want to feel in control. Feeling in control makes us feel good. To achieve this feeling, we tend to do what we perceive is going to make us feel or look good. When we choose what feels good, we feed our ego. When we choose what makes us look good, again we feed our ego. However, as it is explained in my article What is Self-esteem?, building our self-esteem requires we reduce our ego, not feed it.
But there is a third choice: we can choose to do the right thing, hence feeding our self-esteem.
Examples of what feels good, and feeds our ego
- Instant gratification such as addictions (drugs, alcohol, etc.) and obsessions (food, work, shopping, home renovations, etc.)
- Blaming others and looking for entitlement instead of responsibility - "I have the right to..." vs. "It is my responsibility to..."
- Exercising power through anger, authority, guilt trips, etc.
- Getting even - an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth

Mind Boggling
The World Values Survey indicates that, out of 97 countries, Denmark is the happiest country. Second is Puerto Rico, then Colombia. Canada is 9th, the United States of America, 16th, and France, my own country, is 37th! (Now I know why I live in Canada!)
Zimbabwe arrives last, while Russia and Iraq are amongst the last 10 countries of this list.
This survey has been conducted since 1981 and research shows that the overall happiness of the world is increasing. There is hope!

Mind Games
A boy has as many sisters as he has brothers, but each of his sisters has twice as many brothers as she has sisters. How many boys and girls are there in the family?

You will find the solution in the next issue of "With You in Mind" but you still have one month to think about it!

Solution of last newsletter's Mind Game:
The young woman is Dorothy, and the story is The Wizard of Oz. Again, congratulations to Nick for emailing me the right answer!

Belly Dance Classes
Holiday Party (formerly Christmas Party)
Imagine... You have just finished your turkey dinner and your DJ starts playing dancing music. Most party guests need to move and would like to dance, but they are feeling self-conscious and believe they need a few more drinks to drown their inhibitions. Many are ready to leave...
At this moment, a dynamic, entertaining and persuasive dance instructor takes the microphone and joyfully entices everyone to give belly dance a try. A few ladies join her on the dance floor, followed by a lot more ladies and even... a few gentlemen. Encouraged by the relaxed atmosphere, the simplified dance steps and the irresistible music, they all dance, laugh, perform, cheer and applaud. All attendees, dancers and spectators alike, have an unforgettable time!
Afterward, they will be more willing to continue dancing, chatting and rejoicing together. And they will talk about this party for many years to come!
It could be Your Next Holiday Party! To find out more, just reply to this email.
